Newsletter – March 2021

Since March 2020 we have had to cancel month by month as the situation and laws on social distancing have evolved.
However, this month we are trying to be positive!!
We were hoping to be able to have a plant sale at the end of May but following the advice given to the Village Hall, even if we held this outside, it would be impossible to monitor and keep track on there only being 30 people in the car park.
So, we are planning to go ahead with re-opening in June – subject to the Covid restrictions being lifted on the 21st June as planned at the moment.
Your Committee have held a meeting – by Zoom of course – and here is the programme so far:
29th June – Plant sale and social evening:
Whilst details still to be finalised, we are hoping to hold the plant sale from 4.00 pm until 6.00 pm and then have a social evening so that we can get together with members and friends we haven’t seen for some time.
Whether the social evening will be a shared supper or just a get together will be decided nearer the time but it will just be nice to get back in the Hall.
With regard to the plant sale, we realise it will be a bit late for some vegetable and bedding plants but we are sure you will be able to donate something!
27th July – Kevin Alviti – unusual fruit and vegetables to grow:
Until a couple of weeks ago we had still been planning on Charles Dowding, as our Celebrity Speaker, in July but he has advised that he wishes to cancel his booking for two reasons – he has taken on a new piece of land which he needs to get under control and he doesn’t particularly want to travel from Somerset yet.
Gill has managed to persuade Kevin to talk to us, he had been booked for February but has been able to change to July.
15th August – Annual Show:
We plan to hold the Show on the date planned but with a few changes. In order to make more space in the Hall we will concentrating on Section A – Vegetables, Section B – Cut flowers, Section C – Pot Plants and Section H – Outdoor containers. These are the sections that we are required to have in order to qualify for the Banksian Medal.
Also, we are going to have Section F – Floral Art which will be displayed in the small hall.
The Schedule is not yet available, but the classes for each of the Sections A, B, C and H will be the same as in previous years. Section F classes will be advised soon. (Click here for reminder of classes)
We have contacted the three judges for these sections and they are delighted to be coming back and with the changes we are making for social distancing.
Gill, our Programme Secretary, is finalising the programme for the rest of the year and we will publish in the next few weeks. She has also already started on 2022 and has managed to re-book some of our 2020/2021 speakers that we had to cancel.
Kim and Rob Hurst have asked that we let you know that as they are not able to attend the Ludlow Market, they have opened an on-line shop.
Herbs and seeds are listed alphabetically by their common name. Perennials are listed alphabetically by their Latin name. If different varieties of one plant are available, they will be found via the drop-down menu before adding to the cart.
They are currently offering a free delivery service to the local area for orders over £35 as well as contactless collection from the nursery. Local delivery will be every Thursday for orders made before the preceding Tuesday 12pm. They will start this year’s deliveries on Thursday, March 11th.
Hintons Country and Garden:
Hintons are pleased to announce that they have, at long last, started up their Loyalty Card scheme that they were hoping to start last April!!
Application forms can be filled in at the Worcester Road shop and loyalty points are earned at 1 point per £1 spent.
And last but not least:
Welcome to new member Simon Kearney from Bircher Common.
Keep safe and keep gardening.
PS. Remember I still have gloves, vermiculite and root trainer replacement cells and you can still order from Marshalls (which includes Unwins) and T&M and that orders have to be placed through me to get your discount.
