Newsletter – October 2017

Thanks to Jane and John Cross for volunteering to provide the refreshments tonight and to those of you who help with the setting up and clearing up of the Hall.

Don’t forget this evening the speaker is Marion Stainton on Raised Bed Vegetable Growing.  Many of us visited Marion’s garden in the summer so will realise we are in for an interesting talk.

Titley Lunch:

The Club annual Sunday lunch at Titley was on the22nd October.  Although the turnout was very low for this annual event, we all enjoyed the usual lovely meal.

The Titley ladies like there to be at least 40 people – and we normally oblige – but there were only 24 of us!!  This will probably mean we do not get a booking for next year, if they still carry on but fingers crossed.

Seed Orders:

AGM – 19th December – your Club needs you!
Don’t forget, if you want to take advantage of the discounts being offered to the Club by Marshalls and T&M, then the orders must be placed through Monica.  You can hand in your orders tonight and there are still some Catalogues and order forms available.

If you would like to be part of our friendly and lively team keeping your Club running smoothly (we hope!) then we have vacancies on the Committee.  The majority of the Committee are happy to continue to stand (if you want them to!) but unfortunately Sue Beckett is standing down for family reasons.  She will, however, remain a member of the Club.

Kindly, Chris Berry has volunteered to take over the role of Membership Secretary so you will both her and Sue at the desk on the next club night.

We still have a vacancy for a Vice Chairman and could do with one or two more Committee members.

Nomination forms are available from Monica, and should be sent to her by the 5thDecember (or handed, this evening or next month, to any other current committee member).  We meet over tea and biscuits usually on a Monday afternoon, once a month, generally the week preceding the club meetings.

We are proposing one slight change to the Rules of the Club, which is reducing the number of signatories by one but either our Treasurer or Book Keeper will explain this on the night.

The Minutes of Last Year’s AGM are on the notice board this month.  They will also be there next month, and will be available on the web after tonight’s meeting.

August Show – 18th August 2018:

The request for help to run the August Show following the resignation of Eddie Clanzy-Hodge as Chairman has been great.  We now have three new Committee members – Gill Macefield, Pat Robertson and Marjan Bartlett-Freriks together with Peter Furneaux, Trisha Clanzy Hodge and Monica staying from the previous Committee.

We are having our first meeting to discuss next year’s show this week so more news next month.

Club night timings and format:

Last month we put out a questionnaire on club night format and the response was a little disappointing – only 16 votes!!  Although these were split 7 for Option 1 and 9 for Option 2, your committee has had to agree to stay with option 1 for the simple reason that the programme for 2018 has been completed and the speakers booked to start at 8.00 pm.

To recap for those of you who were unable to attend the meeting last month:

Option 1 kept the current format of the evening as it is.  i.e tea, coffee, chat and sales prior to the speaker starting at 8.00pm.

Option 2 proposed starting 30 minutes earlier.  So plant sales and buying raffle tickets would be from 7.00 – 7.30 pm and then the speaker would commence at 7.30, allowing for a more relaxing and sociable time with teas and coffees served after the talk.

We have agreed, however, to revisit the question early in the New Year, and hopefully get a better response, before we start booking the 2019 programme.

The questionnaire, which also shows the pros and cons for each option is on the website for you to review in full and perhaps think about before the subject is raised again.

Next Meeting – 28th November

The speaker is Tamsin Westhorpe on Winter in Stockton Bury
