Newsletter – September 2020

In my updates over the last few months I have been saying that we hoped to be able to start our monthly meetings again in September.
Whilst the Village Hall is still hoping to be opening soon, your committee – following our first face to face committee meeting since February, suitably socially distanced – have made the decision to cancel September, October and November.
The way the rules are at the moment we would only be able to have 30 people in the Hall, including the speaker, all socially distanced and wearing masks and no refreshments.
Gill has contacted the speakers for those months who have all said they would prefer to cancel.
So far we have not cancelled the Club lunch booked for November 15th, nor have we cancelled the December meeting as we would hope to hold some sort of AGM on the 15th. We will let you know the final decisions nearer the time.
We are going ahead with our bookings for 2021 and Gill has started working on the programme so fingers crossed that we will be able to go ahead.
RHS Banksian Medal:
This has now arrived and we would like to be able to present it at the AGM in December so there is still time if you would like to nominate someone you feel has helped our members and community during these difficult times.
Although we won’t be meeting in the Hall, if you want to take advantage of the discounts being offered to the Club then the orders must be placed through me.
Marshalls: They are sending me catalogues and if you let me know you want one, I will let you know when they arrive, and you can collect one from me. Marshall are offering the same terms as last year – 50% on all seeds, 20% on all potatoes, onions, shallots and garlic and 10% on all young plants, fruit trees, soft fruit and gardening equipment.
T&M: As with last year T&M are not issuing catalogues, unless you are personally on their mailing list and receive one at home, their full range can be found online.
Their discount levels remain the same – 50% off a wider range of seed lines, 20% off a selection of potatoes, onions, garlic & shallots and 20% off a selection of fruit.
I have also discovered recently that we can obtain our discount on any special offers you receive by email, but once again the order has to be placed through me.
Marshalls staff are now all back in the office in anticipation of a busy season, but my T&M contact is still working from home, and I have been placing orders!
With all the work you have been doing in the garden, you may like to know that I still have a good supply of gloves and also, vermiculite, which can be collected from me.
Following my email advising of the passing of Anne, I realise that we do not have many current members who remember Anne. Those of you who have taken part in our August Show over the years will have seen her name on many of our Cups and Trophies and she still hold the record of having won the RHS Banksian Medal the highest number of times – 3!
If anyone would like details of the funeral arrangements (no limit on numbers) please email the club for details.
If you hear of any interesting articles or any places of interest that are reopening, then please let me know via the Club email address.
Keep safe and keep gardening.
