ODGC Newsletter March 2026

Audrey Bott

Although the name may not mean much to the current membership, the Club is sad to announce the death of Audrey.

She was an active member for many years but in the latter years only attended our August Show and would sometime present The Millenium Cup, which she donated, to the winner.

Thanks to:

  • Nancy Morgan and Martin Jordan for this month’s refreshments and those members who help set and tidy up the Hall on the evening.  Also, to Jane Cross and Jenny Horwood for setting up this month’s visual and audio requirements.

Don’t Forget:

  • Your Membership Subscription was due in January. Cost £15 including refreshments.  Please see our Treasurer – Gail Scott – to collect your card or renew.
  • Please remember the new ways of paying:
  • BACS is preferable:

Orleton and District Gardening Club

Lloyds Bank

30-99-08

22530268

  • Unfortunately, we can no longer accept payment by cheque but we will obviously still accept cash for the raffle, club sales and plant stall.
  • This month’s speaker is Marion Stainton on “Raised bed vegetable growing”
  • On the website, under “Meeting Reports”, you can read all the write ups of previous speakers.

Melcourt Peat Free Compost:

Following the talk by Richard Cave last month, he sent through some more information on understanding the dates printed on the side of the bags, as they are manufacture dates, not use by dates. This is part of the guidance they give to retailers.

Stephen has added the information onto the February programme page.

Richard has also said that if any of you have any more questions, if you send them to the Club email address, I can forward them on to him on bulk.

Gardeners World Live – NEC:

Once again, we have been offered a pair of tickets to Gardeners World Live at the NEC on Sunday, 21st June.  As well as the normal show gardens, this year’s headline garden is The Garden of Evolution, conceived by Professor Alice Roberts.

If any member is interested in the tickets, please let Monica know.  If it proves to be popular, we will hold a raffle for the tickets.

Plant Sale:

Our annual plant sale is on the 17th May and we should be starting to think of what we can grow and donate for it.  Tomatoes and vegetables are always very popular.

As well as growing seeds, take cuttings and split plants so that we have plenty to sell.

We will start to set up at 10 am for delivery of plants from 10.15 and our lovely “tea ladies” will again be offering bacon rolls as well as the normal tea, coffee and cakes.

Please let us know if you are able to help on the day.

Meal at The Oak Wigmore – 12th May:
