Understanding Manufacture Dates on Melcourt Compost

1. Peat-free compost is biologically active
All Melcourt composts are 100% peat-free and made from composted organic materials such as bark, wood fibre and coir. Like a compost heap, these materials contain living microbial communities.

As a result:
• Microbial activity can gradually use or rebalance nutrients over time; however, this is managed
through Melcourt’s own carefully developed compost formulations
• Fertilisers added during manufacture may change in availability during storage
• Older compost is therefore more likely to give variable performance, particularly for seed sowing

2. The manufacture date shows age, not a “use by” deadline
Melcourt compost does not have an expiry date. Instead, the clearly printed manufacture date is intended as a practical stock-management and advisory tool.

It allows garden centre/staff to:
• Identify the age of stock on display or in storage
• Rotate stock more effectively
• Advise customers on the most suitable use for each bag

To the best of our knowledge, Melcourt is currently the only compost manufacturer in the UK to clearly mark every bag with its date of manufacture. This is done deliberately to support transparency, good horticultural practice, and provide informed customer advice.

3. Fresh compost delivers the most consistent results
Older compost remains perfectly serviceable but is better suited to less demanding applications or may require supplementary feeding. That will be obvious in terms of plant health/leaf condition.
