ODGC Newsletter June 2026
ORLETON AND DISTRICT GARDENING CLUB
JUNE 2026 NEWSLETTER
KATE SMITH
Although the name may not mean much to a lot of the current membership, we are sorry to announce the passing of Kate. Kate was a member for many years and many will remember her for her entries in the Floral Art section of our August Show and even when they were no longer members, Kate and John always visited the Show including last year.
THANKS:
To Rosie Trotter and Diane Russell for providing the refreshments this month and those members who help set up and tidy up the Hall on the evening.
Also, to Marleen de Kluizenaar for organising the audio and visual set up.
OUR JUNE SPEAKERS:
We welcome back Alun and Jill Whitehead who are speaking to us on “Hidden Gardens of Herefordshire”
DON’T FORGET:
- Membership renewal was due in January and payments to the Club are now preferred by either BACS, card or cash.
- Notice to those members still receiving the Newsletter who have not paid their 2026 membership renewal, under our membership terms, this is the last Newsletter you will receive and your name will be removed from our mailing list.
- Write-ups of previous meetings can be found on our website under “Meeting Reports”
AGM – 28th JULY:
A gentle reminder that the AGM is held promptly at 7.30 pm, and normally lasts only about half an hour. The remainder of the evening is a shared supper – we all bring food to share, one savoury and one sweet plate, that are put on the central table, plus you bring whatever you would like to drink. Bring your own crockery, cutlery and glasses and remember to put your names on any plates, etc being put on the centre table. The Club supplies bread, butter and cheese and there are supplies available if you wish to make yourself a tea or coffee BUT don’t forget to wash up after yourself!
However, as stated in the May Newsletter, your committee wish to recommend the following two changes:
Under Rule 8a. of the Constitution, the financial year ends on the 30th November. With us holding a meal in December, money being paid into the bank in November and not paid out until December, it makes reconciliation a little complicated.
We therefore recommend changing the financial year end to the 31st December and therefore 2025/2026 will be a 13-month year.
Under the Club Information, the Organisation of the club states that the meeting formally commences at 8.00 pm.
It has become obvious that speakers are used to a 7.30 pm start and we are proposing making this change. We will obviously have to make other slight changes to the format of the evening.
Full details of the Club Information and Rules/Constitution can be found on our website click here.
The 2027 programme is now complete and will be announced although it will be a little time before it will be available on our website.
The Hall will be open from 7.00 pm and help would be appreciated to set up all the tables.
AUGUST SHOW:
Our 45th Annual Show will be taking place on Saturday 15th August. The Show Group have been busy making preparations since last August but all these preparations will only culminate in a ‘Show’ if a critical mass of members bring entries on the day. It is very much your taking part that matters – definitely a case of ‘the more the merrier’.
So, please take a look at the Show Schedule on the website (click Show Schedule here to view) and think about what you might be able to enter come August. It costs only 10p per exhibit. However, please note that there is a limit of two on the number of exhibits you (or your garden, if you share it with someone) can enter in each class. (Please see the Show Schedule for further detail). But that still gives the opportunity to enter up to 130 exhibits in total!
Please don’t think that your garden has nothing worth showing because what the judges are looking for may surprise you. It certainly surprised our treasurer one year who was convinced her carrots were not good enough to enter but, having been persuaded to do so, walked away with first prize! So please ‘Join the Show, Give it a Go!’. Thank you.
Jane Cross, Show Organiser
NEXT MEETING:
29TH September see Bill Laws speaking to us on the subject of “Apples, pears and the Herefordshire Pomona”
