ORLETON AND DISTRICT GARDENING CLUB
Welcome back to the Hall for our first meeting of the autumn and our speaker is Rowan Griffith on “Magnolias at Hergest Croft”.
THANKS:
To Rosie and Clive Sheridan and Jane Goldman for organising the refreshments this month and to those who help setting up the chairs before the meeting and clearing away at the end of the evening.
AUGUST SHOW:
Thanks to Jane Cross and her Show Group for organising a very successful event. Our biggest problem is getting members to enter and not pre-judge their produce!
The number of entries were up on last year 320 as opposed to 262 in 2023 but the number of members entering was down from 24 to 20 which when you consider we have a membership of over 80 is a very low turnout.
Both the Committee and the Show Group have thoughts on changes that can be made and these will develop over the coming months.
NOVEMBER LUNCH:
At the AGM the consensus of opinion was that an evening meal would be preferred to a lunch.
In order that we can try and sort something out, which would you prefer – Tuesday 19th November, before our last meeting of the year or Tuesday 10th December as a bit of a Christmas Party. Please give Monica your thoughts on Club night.
SEED ORDERS:
Marshalls catalogues are now available, together the order forms. Some of you may have received a catalogue direct or The Little Book of Seed 2024 book earlier this year so there is also a price list updating on availability and price.
The discount on seeds remains at 50% and is 15% on everything else. There are also discounts on bulk delivery of composts etc.
The same as last year the first order has to be over £200 gross and will be delivered to me, not direct to you. They are also adding £1.50 to each order to be individually packed.
As well as the catalogue, there are many more items on the Marshalls website.
NANT-Y-BEDD GARDENS:
A small group of members visited the gardens on the 27th August, after our talk by Sue Mabberley in May and here is a report from Andrew:
On Tuesday 27th August nine club members made their way to Nant-y-Bedd garden located between Abergavenny and Crickhowell.
Arriving at 11.00am we were treated to tea, coffee and delicious home-made cakes, followed by a talk by Sue, the owner.
Nant-y-Bedd is a 10-acre organic garden and woodland lovingly created by Sue over a period of 40 years.
We spent an absorbing 4 hours exploring and this was barely enough as there was so much to see. We wandered at will through the many different levels, through the woods, along the edge of the stream, climbed up into the adult sized tree house, and enjoyed a picnic by the fresh water pool.
Sue was on hand to answer our many questions, before returning to the house for afternoon tea and the journey home. A very successful and entertaining day out. Looking forward to the next outing.
If you would like to go to our website there are a few photographs taken by our members.
PLANT TABLE:
Just a gentle reminder that we have a plant sales table every month we are in the Hall (not AGM night and possibly not January in future). Over time we seem to have forgotten that not everyone grows fruit and vegetables so remember, if you have any surplus produce bring it along and donate it to the Club for sale on Club night.
Also, we are always looking for used empty plant pots! Especially 5” and above.
NEXT MONTH:
Our speaker on the 29th October is Duncan Coombs on “Winter colour and interest in the garden”
